The Role of Women in the Dragon Mage Trilogy

cscheppner Kazin's Quest 0 4

The Role of Women in the Dragon Mage Trilogy.

Occasionally I have been asked how often and to what extent female characters have come up in my series.  The truth is, there are nearly as many major female characters as there are male ones.  In fact, some of the female characters have a more powerful, if less understood, magic at their disposal. In particular, the druids, who are all female, have a magical power over nature and the elementals that is unequalled in Kazin’s world.  They can cast spells to control or sway living creatures to their will.  For instance, their power has the ability to keep the aggression between the mermaids and skink warriors in check.  They can even cast spells to make trees uproot themselves and act according to their will.  Druids always feel the pain and loss that living creatures feel, and work their magic to reduce the suffering that those creatures are experiencing.

Another example of women in prominent positions in the series is the nation north of Kazin’s, where only a queen can rule the land.  How this was decided is not explained, but the end result is a land that is wisely and honestly ruled, (with the exception of a magic user who is manipulating things for his own ends).  This magic user is ultimately the one that Kazin must face to free the land of  the evil that rages throughout.

Three of the eight heroes are female, and each one brings exceptional skills to the group.  Della the elf is unequalled in her bowmanship (bowwomanship?).  Her insistence on joining the group is well warranted, and she handles herself well under pressure.  Her energy and enthusiasm spreads to the group and helps them to get along well with one another.  Perennia is a female centaur, and her status as a princess among her race is a bonus to the heroes on more than one occasion.  She also has excellent archery skills that come in handy.  Her influence with human cavalry is also a big factor later on.  Milena, a human spell caster, is a bit more complex and mysterious.  Her skill at healing spells is a necessity, and her other magical skills are essential for the companions to succeed.  She doesn’t allow anyone to push her around.  Each character in the book is unique, and their interaction with one another is interesting and fun to follow.  This adds to a story that has interesting twists, and mysteries that unfold as the story unwinds.  Everyone should derive something from this series that should keep them coming back for more.
